Watch as Jonathan Cage, Director of Business Development and Mike Moren, Commercial Director, discuss the challenges to sustainable packaging and their solutions. In this vlog, Jonathan and Mike review:
- The challenges manufacturers face when sourcing a sustainable packaging solution
- The benefits of XPP™ Polypropylene
- The implementation of XPP™ Polypropylene
- The tradeoffs of other packaging solutions
What challenges do manufacturers face when it comes to finding a sustainable packaging solution?
Traditionally, many packaging materials are created from polystyrene. Though it’s held its own through time, manufacturers, government agencies, and recycling companies have started to blow the whistle on the long-term health and environmental effects of this packaging solution.
One of the greatest challenges facing polystyrene packaging solutions is collecting, sorting and recycling, specifically in single-serve cup form. This has become so problematic that in recent years, polystyrene was classified as “not recyclable.” With goals established by the U.S. Plastics Pact to phase this material out by 2025, the need for a replacement solution has never been more urgent.
The Solution: XPP™ Polypropylene
XPP™ Polypropylene is a fully recyclable, designed-for-sustainability packaging solution; it’s ideal for numerous goods including shelf-stable products, refrigerated dairy and yogurt applications, and condiments. It meets food processor requirements for Form-Fill-Seal applications, and easily drops into nearly all FFS manufacturer platforms, meaning it can run on existing equipment without great capital investment.
How does XPP address the tradeoff between sustainability and value?
Perhaps the greatest benefit of XPP™ Polypropylene is that it addresses benefits other packaging alternatives have failed to achieve. Many other “compostable” materials may be made from bio-based materials, but they don’t process well on existing Form-Fill-Seal equipment, are wildly expensive to implement, or in many cases, both.
These alternative solutions aren’t feasible to adopt in the same manner as XPP™ Polypropylene.
What does the implementation of XPP look like?
The adoption of XPP™ Polypropylene doesn’t end at implementation. Our team at ICPG continuously supports manufacturers in the field - straight from conceptualization to commercialization, allowing manufacturers to scale as needed. This support ensures manufacturers are continuously offered new solutions and strategies as technology for green packaging improves.
